Wesnet services is now offering a range of Woodland courses aimed at both the small woodland owner and those with an interest in woodland management. All of the courses will be run within our own area of Semi-ancient Natural Woodland in south east Hampshire. further details will be sent Prior to the date of the course.
Tree Identification and Uses 7th December 2008
Identify trees in winter, use clues such as fallen leaves and discuss their forestry, craft and ecological uses. Particularly useful for those working in woodland, who are so busy they never get time to look properly at the trees, and for anyone wanting to learn more about what they see in their woodland walks.
Woodland Archaeology and History 10th January 09, 15th February 09
Course leaders John and Kester Westcott
Look at archaeological features found in woodland, use them and documentary evidence to trace the history of a wood. Advice on where to find useful documents for your area.
Woodland Flora 15th March 09, 11th April 09
Identify woodland flora in Bluebell Wood and find how this changes with coppice cycles and management. Discuss how soil and other variables will affect flora in a wood. Where you are likely to find them, and how to at least find which family unknown flowers belong to. Ideal for everyone who wants to get more out of woodland walks, works in or owns a wood and wants to find out more about the flowers present.
Spoon Making
April 09 (date to be announced)
Course leader Wayne Batchelor.
Learn how to make a spoon from green wood sourced from Bluebell Wood. By the end of the course you should have a spoon, and have learnt the techniques needed to produce more.
Basic Woodland Management passed
Woodland can be managed in a number of ways, and this course will cover several different methods with examples in our own wood. We will also show you the state of the wood after being left unmanaged for some years and how it looks after restoration management. This course is primarily for those with an interest in working woodland, but may also be of interest to those who just walk in woods.
All courses are led by Kester Westcott BSc. (Hons.) Wildlife Management
They will be based at Lowtons and Blagden Copses, Clanfield, Hampshire, will last one day and will cost £40 each per person.
